GENRE RESEARCH #2: Romantic Comedy
CAMS- There are several CAMS used in romantic comedies. Such as Eye-Shot level, this helps create relatable feelings which is good for conversations or glances giving a romantic feeling. Directors would use over the shoulder to show the dialogue happening between two characters. This helps establish intimacy. Directors would use a Close-Up or Extreme Close up to focuses on specific details intensifying emotions of the relationships.
CLAMPS- Some settings that are pretty common in ROMCOMS are the “Perfect” Cities. Such as London, Los Angeles and Paris. Romcoms are mainly filmed in New York because it has a beautiful setting Most of the clothing in romcoms are soft and cozy outfits like a knitted sneaker and some jeans with dramatic but soft makeup. For example, “10 things I hate about you”, the girl begins with hating men and their complete existence then later falls in love with a boy, which is usually how some romcoms go.
EDITING- Some editing used in romcoms are music cues or sound designs. This is used to emphasize tension during a sense or to add to the plot. They would use quick cuts to jump settings or jump ahead of time. Montages show growth in affection, things the couple did together to lead up to their coming together. This is usually followed with a love song or slowed music.
SOUNDS- romcoms are mainly dialogue driven. Some actors may sing songs to express how they feel about a person. Some romcoms are even Musicals like “La La Land”. The director may try to capture a cute moment between the two by making them seem unbothered around each other making it comfortable to break into song.
